Time Travel Tuesday: Doctor Who Episode #4

Yes, I realize it’s not Tuesday but I’m posting this anyway.

Today's Time Travel Pick (information provided by IMDB)
Title: Doctor Who Episode #4: Aliens of London
Type: TV series/British
Year: 2005-present
Genre: Drama, adventure, family
Rating: TVPG

Summary: Rose and the Doctor return to the present day and witness the crash of an alien aircraft into the Thames.

Reader’s Take: In this episode Rose and the Doctor return to what they believe is Rose’s present only to discover a year has passed and Rose has been presumed a runaway who took off with a much older man. I love how Rose’s mom freaks out and calls the Doctor a pervert and sleaze bucket and some other things I can’t remember.

But I laughed out loud when they were watching the news coverage of the crash in Rose’s living room with a bunch of other people and the random little boy is sitting on the Doctor’s lap. My mom brain went on and I was like, “um…if you think he’s a pervert why are you letting him near small children?” Honestly, it goes perfectly with what is already established of Rose’s mom’s character…she cares about some things but overall she’s not the most attentive mother. When the aliens revealed themselves at the end, I was immediately reminded of Ghost Busters. Did anyone else get a Ghost Busters vibe from the alien forms? Not that I minded. Ghost Busters rocks. This one ended with a cliff hanger so I’m diving into episode 5 right away.

Inside The Writer’s Brain: As a writer of time travel, I’m always trying to think like a reader/viewer and find those holes. Why didn’t Rose and the Doctor head back to the time machine the second they realized that a year had passed in Rose’s present? Was it just the space ship crashing that distracted them?

  1. I love this episode! The Slitheen from Raxicoricofallipatorius! And as for why they didn't go back 11 more months to make it so Rose was never missing, it's because they aren't supposed to go back on their own timeline, if I remember correctly. If they went back 11 months then when they reached the one year later mark there would be two Roses and two Doctors existing at the same time which creates the potential for a paradox and all sorts of messed up wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

    1. oh wow! that makes so much more sense! Do you think that's been introduced yet by episode 4 and I missed it? That's exactly the kind of time travel details I'm trying to research.

    2. I don't think it was introduced by episode 4, I'm pretty sure I only know that because I've seen all 7 seasons and it's SO RIDICULOUSLY INTENSE. There's all sorts of awesome time travel rules you'll end up learning about, but you haven't missed any yet so you're all set :D
